  • Chi Chi Rodriguez’s story is almost mythical. While growing up in Puerto Rico, Rodriguez began caddying at the age of eight. This introduced him to the game while also providing a means to supplement his family’s meager income.
  • With a rolled-up tin can for a ball and a club he crafted from the branch of a guava tree, Rodriguez taught himself how to play. After serving in the Army for two years, he returned to caddying.
  • Soon, however, he landed on the PGA Tour, where he snagged eight titles between 1963 and 1979. Through the years, Chi Chi’s style and personality also made him a favorite among the fans.
  • After sinking a putt, Chi Chi often transformed his putter into a sword, mimicking the moves of a torero slaying a bull.
  • Even though he was a very small man, he had a special stance and swing with the driver that enabled him to hit the ball as far as the longest drivers on the tour earning him legend status.
