The father of old-school tattooing, Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins was a true classic in every sense of the word. A tough old seadog with a shrewd intellect, Jerry excelled at a unique style of folk art that symbolized an important time in American history and created an artistic legacy that is still felt today.
Jerry’s education began in his early teens hand-poking pelican ink tattoos while hopping freight trains across the country. At 19, he arrived in Chicago and began cutting his tattoo chops in the infamous arcades of State Street under the tutelage of “Tatts” Thomas. It was there that he enlisted in The Great Lakes Naval Academy. Skipping across the globe on schooner ships, Jerry passed through the China Seas and other remote ports of call. It was the beginning of his lifelong obsession with Asian culture, art and imagery.
Finishing his ?rst naval stint in the late ’20s, Collins decided to settle on what was then the remote island of Oahu, Hawaii. In some ways, his timing could not have been better: this last outpost would soon become the stomping ground for over a million soldiers and sailors, all of whom were ready to live life to the fullest during their 48-hour shore leave in Honolulu!
And so, for the next 40 years, Sailor Jerry had a constant canvas of military men to obsessively perfect his deftly crafted, boldly lined, balls-forward tattoo style that blended classic American designs and traditions with Asiatic coloring and sensibilities. His one-of-a-kind tattoos and ?ash would eventually ?nd their way into the highly secretive world of Japanese tattoo masters known as “Horis.” Thus, Jerry became one of the ?rst American tattoo artists to correspond directly with these masters, trading colors, designs and techniques. This “collaboration” led to the development of a whole new style of American tattooing that combined the best elements of both the East and West.
A self-taught electrician and an all-around tinkerer, Jerry revolutionized modern tattooing. From his never-ending search for a smoother power supply to the custom Bulldog build of his tattoo machines, Sailor Jerry lived for his art. An early proponent of needle sterilization and aftercare, he also expanded the old school’s color palette by developing the industry’s ?rst purple ink.
Sailor Jerry’s classic, yet groundbreaking, skin art portrays a legacy that’s as true today as it was generations ago. Take a look and see. His business cards famously said “My Work Speaks For Itself,” and we believe no truer words have ever been spoken!
